General Information

Lake Tahoe offers skiers anything and everything they are looking for. Want a nice resort for the family? No problem, Northstar’s your answer. Want a crazy nightlife and easy access to awesome skiing? Bingo, Heavenly’s your ticket. Want to stay in a charming mountain town without the commercialisation you might find at typical resorts? Perfect for you are Incline Village or Tahoe City. Bottom line is that the collection of ski areas and towns are close enough together making exploring fun and easy, yet each area is distinctive and unique. You’ll see the differences between Kirkwood and Squaw, Alpine Meadows and Sierra. And you’ll love ’em all for it!
The ski areas are very popular on holiday weekends with skiers from L.A., San Francisco, and Sacramento but weekdays, the resorts can feel empty. Take your pick from the areas each day so that you can sample all of the terrain. Beginners and intermediates will prefer Northstar or Sierra at Tahoe but most of the areas offer a nice variety of terrain. Squaw and Heavenly boast some of the best advanced and extreme skiing in the US, but don’t overlook Kirkwood and Alpine Meadows! Both resorts get great powder and tend to be less crowded since they aren’t as well known (YET!).

Casino scene not for everybody
Isn’t easy to be based at on area while still getting the benefits of all the areas

Accommodation Information

The Tahoe area is shared by the two states of California and Nevada and both offer a slightly different atmosphere. The North Shore in California offers a quieter option. Tahoe City, close to Northstar, Squaw, and Alpine Meadows, is in a central location for skiing several areas. There are charming B&Bs, hotels, and condos in the town and at Squaw and Northstar. Incline Village, still on the North Shore but just inside Nevada, has additional accommodation options and a small yet eager casino scene. (Casinos and gambling are not legal in California, but are in Nevada.) If something a bit more lively is your cup of tea, staying on the South Shore would suit. There are several casino-hotels close to Heavenly in the town of South Lake that have impressive night time options to choose from. The casinos are often a great value since the overall hope is that you will pop in to the gaming halls after skiing all day to try your luck at Blackjack or Roulette. It’s not a bad compromise as long as you can break away from the slots long enough to actually ski!
