Winter Park must be the most reasonably priced, unpretentious mainstream ski resort in the US. If you want top quality skiing, great value and experience “real” small town America, you can’t beat it. The terrain is exceptional and snow quality is as good as it gets. Advanced skiers have fearsome moguls and plenty of glades, chutes and bowls to play in. Every level of intermediate is catered for, from the perfectly groomed cruiser to bowls just right for a first attempt at off-piste. Beginners have the superb Discovery Park – a 25-acre roped off mid-mountain area with its own lifts, nursery area, improvers runs etc.
Why Go There?
Why Go Elsewhere?
Short transfer from Denver
Highest snowfall of major resorts in Colorado
Access to Berthoud Pass for backcountry skiing and riding
Small and quiet resort but tons of fun
Tremendous lift system: rarely a queue even on busy weekends
Arguably too uncommercial; nondescript roadside town
You can stay right at the mountain or in the town of Winter Park. The resort has a great shuttle service so it’s easy to get around. The lodging at the mountain is all fairly new and very nice, a great option if you want to be the first one on the chair in the morning! There are a handful of bars and shops at the base area, all within easy walking distance of the accommodation. In town, you have more of a selection of hotels and some condo units, but Winter Park is nowhere near as overbuilt as some other Colorado destinations. There is a nice cosy, familiarity at the bars and restaurants and the locals are eager to share their enthusiasm about the area.
Beaver Village Resort: This collection of in-town condos and a complex of lodge rooms, and annexe rooms, provides a nice variety of accommodation options for Winter Park. The facilities at the lodge complex include a restaurant, lounge, hot tubs, and sauna. The condos have their own self-catering amenities and there is an indoor pool complex for those units. Lodge and annexe rooms include “all you can eat” half board buffet, which is a great option for families. Beaver Village is informal, convenient, and a great value. The annexe rooms are large (2 singles, 2 doubles) and en-suite but are sparsely, simply furnished; great for those on a tight budget.
Zephyr Mountain Lodge: SKI-IN/SKI-OUT Luxury with slopeside location just 110 feet from the Zephyr Express. One, two and three bedroom condos accommodate 1 to 8 people. Units are fully furnished with microwave, full kitchen, fireplace. Other features include: heated covered parking, laundry facilities, fitness room and four outdoor hot tubs.
Grand Victorian: One of the highest rated B&Bs in Colorado. It’s an elegant, romantic hideaway in a secluded location. All rooms have Jacuzzi tubs, robes, hairdryers, slippers, and TV. Superior units also have cathedral ceilings, fireplaces, terrace, VCR, and mountain views. Hot gourmet breakfast and apres ski fondue with hot toddies, beer, wine, and cheese included. There is also a comfortable fireside lounge and restaurant. The Grand Victorian is on the shuttle route. Under 16s are not accepted.
Sawmill Townhomes: These 3 bedroom/3 bathroom units are the highest standard of condos offered in Winter Park. Located in the town itself, they are convenient to the shuttle route and town services. An excellent option for those wanting the freedom of self-catering with all the conveniences of a town location.
Bottom line about Winter Park-it’s fun! It’s the best destination for UK skiers seeking a true Colorado experience of great snow, friendlyfolks, and unbeatable value.
